Customers increasingly use ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI-powered search experiences to research problems and compare providers. But how can you tell whether your business appears in those answers? And how do you know whether your visibility is improving?
Short answer: measure three separate signals: how often your brand appears in a consistent sample of AI answers, how often your website is cited as a source, and what measurable visibility or traffic you receive from AI search. Combine repeatable prompt testing with Google Search Console and analytics. A single ChatGPT answer is not a ranking report.
Here is a practical method for establishing a baseline without relying on vague, black-box visibility scores.
What does AI search visibility mean?
AI visibility is not a single event. The distinction between being mentioned, being cited and receiving a visitor matters.
| Signal | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mention | Your company's name appears in an AI-generated answer. | Your website was used as a source. |
| Source citation | An AI answer links to a particular page on your website. | The AI system recommends your business. |
| Google AI impression | Search Console records your URL appearing in a generative AI feature. | Someone clicked through. |
| Referral visit | Analytics identifies a visitor arriving from an AI platform. | Every AI-influenced visit was captured. |
A company might be recommended without a direct link, while an informative article might be cited without its publisher being recommended as a provider. Both are useful observations, but they are different outcomes.
Step 1: choose questions your prospective customers ask
Start with the customer's problem, not your brand name. Asking ChatGPT whether it knows your company tells you little about whether a new customer would discover you.
An Amsterdam-based accounting firm, for example, could test:
- Which accounting firms in Amsterdam help early-stage companies?
- What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
- How do I choose an accountant for an international business?
- What should I consider before outsourcing bookkeeping?
- Which questions should I ask an accounting firm before hiring it?
Choose around 10 to 15 questions that reflect three types of intent: learning, comparing and selecting a provider. Customer conversations, existing search queries and real FAQs are better sources than invented keyword variations.
Keep the wording consistent. A question about choosing a provider is different from a general definition question, even if both concern accounting.
Step 2: test under comparable conditions
Run the same question set in the AI products that your audience uses, such as ChatGPT with web search, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Google AI Overviews may or may not appear for a given query, so they should not be treated as a guaranteed result for every test.
For each observation, record:
- Date and time.
- Platform and search mode, where identifiable.
- Exact question, language and relevant location.
- Whether your brand was mentioned.
- Whether a link to your website was cited.
- Which competitors appeared.
- A result link or screenshot, when available.
Use fresh conversations and consistent settings where possible. Responses can vary with personalization, location, current web results and model behavior. Repeat important prompts rather than making a business decision based on a single answer.
Step 3: track mentions and citations separately
You do not need an expensive platform to begin. A spreadsheet with one row per test is enough.
Brand mention rate
Responses mentioning your brand / total tested responses × 100%
Website citation rate
Responses citing your website / total tested responses × 100%
Calculate these separately for each platform and question category. Always show the sample size. Four mentions in ten trials offer far less certainty than a larger, carefully repeated set of observations, even when both produce a 40% mention rate.
These are sample measures, not an official market share or permanent position in ChatGPT.
Step 4: use Google's new generative AI reports in Search Console
Manual testing is useful, but Google now offers another source of evidence. In June 2026 it introduced dedicated Search Console reports for generative AI features. Google says those insights were rolled out globally by August 31, 2026.
The reporting helps website owners investigate:
- Impressions of their URLs in Google's generative AI experiences across Search and Discover.
- Which pages appeared in those experiences.
- Countries and, where available, devices associated with that visibility.
- Changes over time.
This is an important improvement over guessing about Google AI visibility using screenshots alone. Check what data is available for your property; a new or low-traffic site may have little to report.
However, Google's report does not measure how frequently ChatGPT or Perplexity mentions your brand. Keep those platform-specific observations separate.

Step 5: connect AI visibility to website visits and enquiries
In Google Analytics 4, inspect identifiable referral visits from AI platforms. Which landing pages attract those visitors? Do they engage with the content or contact your business?
The limits matter. Some AI-influenced visitors have no recognizable referral source. Consent choices and analytics implementation also affect the data. A reported increase in AI referrals is useful evidence, but not a complete measure of how many prospects were influenced by AI.
For lead generation, an additional question on a contact form or during a call, ‘How did you find us?’, can provide useful qualitative context.
Step 6: repeat the same test every month
A baseline becomes valuable when you can compare it fairly over time. Retest the same core questions using consistent recording methods. Add new questions as a separate group so you do not silently change your original sample.
A practical monthly report can include:
- Brand mentions and website citations by platform.
- Questions where you appeared or were absent.
- Changes in competing brands mentioned.
- Google AI impressions and visible pages from Search Console.
- Recognizable AI referral visits and measurable enquiries.
- Specific actions for the next month.
For example, if competitors appear for a service-related question but your company does not, check whether your service page clearly explains whom you help, what you do and how you work. If the page is not indexed, solve the technical SEO issue first.
What if your AI visibility is low?
Start with discoverability and usefulness, not supposed secret AI hacks. Explain your services clearly, publish genuinely helpful information, create meaningful internal links and ensure search engines can crawl and index your pages. For ChatGPT Search, check that your site does not accidentally block OAI-SearchBot.
A FAQ section or Article markup does not guarantee a citation. Better content and technical access improve your eligibility to be discovered, but no AI platform promises to mention a particular brand.

Frequently asked questions
Can I measure my ranking in ChatGPT?
You can measure how frequently your business appears for a defined set of questions. There is no single, stable position for every brand across all ChatGPT responses.
What is the difference between a brand mention and a source citation?
A brand mention names your company. A citation refers to a particular page as a source. One can occur without the other.
Is Google Search Console enough to measure AEO?
No. Google's generative AI reports describe visibility within Google's systems. They do not count mentions in ChatGPT or Perplexity.
How often should I measure AI visibility?
A monthly review with a fixed question set is a practical starting point. You can check more frequently around major changes, provided the method remains comparable.
Conclusion
AI visibility can be measured, as long as you explain what each metric represents. Combine repeated AI-answer observations with source citations, Search Console and analytics to build a useful baseline and identify your next improvements.
